Cow Shed & Milking

1. At the back of the vat, set taps 1 and 2 to milk position (both horizontal).

2. Put a clean sock on the filter, lock it in, and close the clip on the rubber hose at the bottom of the filter.

3. Turn on primary cooler tap 3.

4. Close drain 4 beside the primary cooler.

5. Turn on the washdown pump, switch 5.

6. Check there is enough teat spray for the milking.

7. Set the teat-spray taps: open left tap 6, close right tap 7.

8. Turn the plant on, green button 8.

9. Close the two clips on the rubber hoses at each end of the pit, 9 and 10.

10. Close the two drains in the centre of the pit by the milk pump.

11. At the end of the mob: turn tap 11 on for 30 seconds to purge into the vat, then off. Set taps 1 and 2 to dump position (both vertical).

1. Purge the previous mob's milk: turn tap 11 on for 30 seconds.

2. Check taps 1 and 2 at the back of the vat are in dump position (both vertical).

3. Connect the hose with white tape to the pipe at the back of the vat.

4. Open tap 12 at the back of the calf vat.

5. After milking the colostrum cows: turn tap 11 on for 30 seconds to purge into the vat, then off.

6. Close tap 12 at the back of the calf vat.

7. Disconnect the white-tape hose from the pipe at the back of the vat.

• Purge the previous mob's milk: turn tap 11 on for 30 seconds.

• Check taps 1 and 2 are in dump position (both vertical).

• TO CONFIRM: the manual stops here. Add where treated milk is diverted to (drum or effluent), how treated cows are marked and kept separate, and how to switch the plant back to the vat. Treated milk must NEVER reach the vat or the calves.

1. When the cows finish, hang all cups in the jetters and lock the vacuum buttons down.

2. Pull each mastitis screen out and turn it around.

3. Open the two clips on the rubber hoses at each end of the pit, 9 and 10.

4. Purge all milk: turn tap 11 on for 30 seconds.

5. Set taps 1 and 2 to dump position (both vertical).

6. Turn off primary cooler tap 3.

7. Turn the flushing pulsator on, switch 13 down.

8. Fill the white tub with cold water, tap 14. Run it through with vacuum taps 15, then off (cold pre-rinse).

9. Replace the filter sock with a new one and lock it in.

10. Fill the tub with hot water from the large cylinder, tap 16.

11. Add 500 ml Kleer Klenz to the hot water (blue and white jug).

12. Turn on vacuum taps 15. At the back of the vat, once the water runs hot, connect the clear recycle hose to the pipe.

13. Recycle for 5 minutes. Do not let the water drop below 60C.

14. Disconnect the clear hose. When the tub is empty, turn taps 15 off.

15. Fill with cold water (tap 14), add 500 ml acid detergent, run through, then off.

16. Fill with cold water (tap 14), add 10 ml XY12, run through, then off.

17. Finish with Turning the plant off.

1. Opening steps: same as the hot wash above (cups in the jetters and buttons locked, mastitis screens turned, clips 9 and 10 open, purge with tap 11 for 30 seconds, taps 1 and 2 to dump, primary cooler tap 3 off, flushing pulsator switch 13 down).

2. Fill the tub with cold water (tap 14), run through (taps 15), then off (cold rinse).

3. Replace the filter sock with a new one and lock it in.

4. Fill with cold water (tap 14), add 500 ml acid detergent, run through, then off.

5. Fill with cold water (tap 14), add 10 ml XY12, run through, then off.

6. Finish with Turning the plant off.

1. Pull the black rubber bung out of interceptor 17.

2. Turn the plant off, red button 8.

3. Turn the flushing pulsator off, switch 13 up.

4. Open the clip on the rubber hose at the bottom of the filter.

5. Open drain 4 beside the primary cooler.

6. Pull down the buttons on all sets of cups.

7. Open the two drains in the centre of the pit by the milk pump.

8. Check the refrigerator is turned on.

• Normal use: all taps along the front of the calf pens off (up is off); milk tap on (tap 1); turn the milk pump on at the wall switch. Always turn it off at the wall when finished.

• Weekly flush of the milk lines: pump off; milk tap off (tap 1); drain the pipes into buckets; high-pressure water tap on (tap 2); open the pen taps one at a time to flush; high-pressure tap off (tap 2); drain; close the pen taps; milk tap back on (tap 1).

• Teat spray after every milking to cut bacteria. Check teats for sores.

• Check there is enough teat spray before milking; set the dispenser taps (open left tap 6, close right tap 7).

• TO CONFIRM: the manual gives no mixing ratio. Add the product and the mix you use.

TO CONFIRM: this procedure was never written in the manual. Add what counts as contaminated milk, where it is dumped, how the vat and lines are cleared, and who to tell so a load isn't lost or a grade triggered.
